‘SNL’ Pays Silent Tribute To Hugh Hefner

Just before Ryan Gosling said his goodnights from the Saturday Night Live stage tonight, the show paid a quick tribute to Playboy founder Hugh Hefner by showing the color-tinted portrait used when Hef hosted the show 40 years ago. Hefner, who died Wednesday at age 91, hosted an episode during SNL ‘s third season, October 15, 1977. His musical guest was folk-rock singer Libby Titus. One sketch even had Hefner debating the Playboy Philosophy with Socrates (played by John… Deadline http://ift.tt/2yhlnGE October 01, 2017 at 05:24AM

‘SNL’: Alec Baldwin’s Trump Hangs Up On “So Nasty” San Juan Mayor

Alec Baldwin ’s Donald Trump kicked off Saturday Night Live by hanging up on the pleading mayor of San Juan. “That woman was so nasty,” said Baldwin, using one of Trump’s favorite insults. (See a clip below). SNL doesn’t seem to have lost any of its snap as it started it 43rd season with a sketch as current as today’s presidential tweets. With featured (and underutilized) player Melissa Villaseñor as Carmen Yulín Cruz, SNL’s cold open had a polo-shirted Trump speaking by… Deadline http://ift.tt/2fBCoA4 October 01, 2017 at 03:56AM

‘The Dead Next Door’ Are Here, and They Want to Borrow a Cup of Brains

By Rob Hunter Plus 13 More New Releases to Watch This Week on Blu-ray/DVD! Welcome to this week in home video! Click the title to buy a Blu-ray/DVD from Amazon and help support FSR in the process! Pick of the Week The Dead Next Door What is it?  It’s the zombie apocalypse. Good thing the Zombie Squad has gone through training for just such an event. Why see it?  The zombie sub-genre is filled to the gills with shambling hordes and the flesh-munching undead, but while most aren’t worth the brain matter more than a few stand out as terrifically entertaining. Most of those great ones are well-known, and this 1990 indie deserves to be among their company. It’s low-budget, but the effects, originality, and personality all shine through and work to deliver a fun, gory, highly entertaining zombie romp. The fact that it was directed by a 19 year-old — who was 23 when he finished it — makes it that much more impressive. This new Blu-ray features a restored picture alongside a ton of su

A Phone that Probably Won’t Have Updates

The smartphone market has always been a tough battle, not for the faint-hearted. Microsoft has never been the strongest in that battle, unfortunately – with the Microsoft Kin and not to mention the partnership with Nokia. Microsoft has fallen on some hard luck with the smartphone battle and failed various times to make a dent in the market, overly dominated by Android and iOS – more importantly, Samsung and Apple. An interesting and unique perspective of – what would a Windows phone have been like if Microsoft made one that ran its wildly popular Windows 95 operating system? – was recently asked, and answered by UI/UX designer Henrique Perticarati. In order to complement the operating system, Perticarati gave the smartphone a familiar beige plastic, identical to those of the 80’s. The WinPhone 95 has a chunky and awkward brick aesthetic which is evidently the antithesis to today’s rectangular slab of metal in smartphones today. The WinPhone 95 humorously gives way to a small trackba

Fantastic Fest: Don’t Get Short With ‘Downsizing’

By Brad Gullickson Alexander Payne and Matt Damon remain small in this latest satirical scolding of our middle-class desires. We’re all doomed. Look out your window. It’s obvious. Go big or go home? F that noise. For Matt Damon and the rest of the human race, our only hope resides in a revolutionary Norwegian process of Ant-Manification. As a species, we’ve been feasting on a hundred years worth of fast food in half the time, and our toxins have enveloped the earth flashing us forward to a justified extinction. The only solution is to decrease our footprint, to reduce an endless landfill of waste to no more than a Hefty garbage bag. Alexander Payne embraces the comedic absurdity of such a hopeful notion, but probably has a little too much fun with a sci-fi zinger that honestly leaves me Soylent Green queasy. Damon’s Paul Safranek is disappearing into a suburban hell of his own making. He’s got the large automobile, the beautiful house, and the beautiful wife. He’s never more than

Fantastic Fest: ‘Mom and Dad’ Grinds Gore for Your Pleasure

By Brad Gullickson Nicolas Cage and Selma Blair chew through scenery and sinew in this latest wannabe grindhouse exercise. I’ve often struggled with the pretend grindhouse film. Some of my favorite movies ever produced are weirdo assaults on decency. The experience of witnessing David Carradine steer his Frankenstein-mobile into a herd of geriatric hospital patients in Death Race 2000 is one of astonishment and awe. These were movies made by maniacs, and the danger of seeing something truly deplorable was equally thrilling and disturbing. However, nostalgic gazes into the rear-view mirror of the charmingly slimy aesthetic have resulted in mixed bags at best (Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double-bill) and the grotesquely boring at worst ( Hostel ). Theft as art has always been an essential element to the creative process. Its progression is the product of the consummation of existing art and ingenuity, but replication without contribution might as well be mastu
