Amidst the chaos of last week's election, Elon Musk began selling Tesla-branded Tequila online. Check out the bottle design: Unlike Musk's hocking of flamethrowers, which were simply rebadged roofing torches, the Tesla Tequila is legit: It's "an exclusive, small-batch premium 100% de agave tequila añejo made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves," produced by Nosotros Tequila . Despite the $250-a-pop price tag, the entire batch sold out within minutes of being posted online. And as you'd expect, the bottles are now being sold--empty-- on eBay for up to $1,200. What I really want to know is: Who designed that bottle, and what is the base made out of? The website says only that the glass is hand-blown. Do you reckon the base is real metal, or plastic? With everyone wearing different styles of facemasks, Duke University physician and professor Eric Westman wondered: Are each mask-sellers' claims of efficacy true? Which masks are the most effective, and which simply provide a false sense of security? As reported by Duke Health , Westman's colleague Martin Fischer , the chemist and physicist in charge of Duke's Advanced Light Imaging and Spectroscopy facility, devised a scientific test using a laser . This year's Cocktail Robotics Grand Challenge wound up being canceled due to COVID, but Donald Bell of Maker Project Lab didn't know that eight months ago, when he started building his entry for the competition. Gear developer Solgaard recently launched an ambitious campaign on Kickstarter. Rather than designing a singular product that would solve a simple user need--in this case, wireless charging--the company looked at other needs that same user might have, then designed a system to meet them. The end result is their HomeBase Ecosystem . The backbone of the system is the HomeBase, a simple, minimalist floating shelf that can wirelessly charge multiple devices: The Juicepack is a wireless powerbank that can be charged from the HomeBase, as well as via its built-in solar panels. A new face mask design competition hopes to stop the spread of COVID while getting young people engaged. While the U.S. currently leads the world in COVID-19 cases and deaths, rates are rising worldwide. According to Reuters , "Almost 40 countries have reported record single-day increases in coronavirus infections over the past week, around double the number that did so the previous week." Aside from the obvious leaders of the U.S., Brazil and India, countries like Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Belgium, Israel and others are helping the U.S. lead this deadly charge. Whatever we as human beings have been doing to stop the spread, is not enough. The easing of social distancing is one culprit. A failure to wear masks is another. A latex balloon might seem like the simplest of objects, but this Discovery video makes it seem just slightly less complicated than building a missile. This is such a bummer! Some years ago I learned a fun factoid by watching a presentation (screenshots below) by Susan Kare, the legendary graphic designer who not only created the Chicago, Geneva and Monaco typefaces, but the icon sets for the original Macintosh. Kare explained that the original Command Key was an apple, but Steve Jobs felt the apple was being overused. He requested she come up with a new Command symbol. After looking at and rejecting some candidates… …Kare began flipping through a book of symbols. She zeroed in on this: The book mentioned the symbol was used in Swedish campgrounds to indicate places of interest. Kare liked the symbol, which was easy to draw in the 16x16-pixel requirements of the time, and went with it.
