The Quirks of Living In An Old Home

Every once in a while, I’m reminded of how quirky our home really is — how impractical features of it can be. I get in the rhythm of things (i.e. kick the door twice to get it to latch while pushing my body weight into it to lock it), and forget that other homes don’t function like mine. My 1900-era home, my full-of-potential fixer-upper, has quirks. And of course, the longer I live here, the more I discover. I don’t know why, but I had always assumed these oddities would be pretty standard in old homes — creaky stairs, squeaky doors, etc. but some of the most prominent quirks in my house, I’d never heard of before. Like our front entryway, for example. We have a nice size entry room with a large closet and a large window right off of the front door and it connects via door to the living room. It has the same hardwood floors, same original doors and same window as the rest of the home, but zero insulation in the walls and no heat register. It’s a complete icebox in the winter. I’d l...

Charlotte, NC’s Haymaker Blends Modern Design with Rustic Appalachian Spirit

I’ve always dreamt of living in a place where I can just walk downstairs and pop into the attached restaurant, living the life as a regular —  the severs all know me by name and the bartender has my favorite drink waiting for me. Scents of daily specials would drift upstairs and draw me from home to join in the local flair. On top of that, I’ve always been drawn to businesses by branding and the look of the logo, the name of a place, and the story that is shared within the space. Combining these two ideas is the newly built restaurant  Haymaker in Charolette, NC. Haymaker is located in The Ascent  in Uptown — a 33-story, mixed-use/apartment high rise in a LEED Silver building — near BB&T Ballpark. With families living just upstairs and the goal of bringing in as many local farm selections as possible, Haymaker is like the modern version of my dreams. Led by chef William Dissen, the Haymaker kitchen reinterprets the bounty of the Piedmont area and Appalac...

Top 20 Before & Afters of All Time: #5 A-Frame Cottage Renovation

Since our own house has been through some renovations lately (our bathroom , living room , runner and the bedroom coming soon !), I’ve been enjoying reliving so many of your favorite Before & Afters this year. We’re down to our #5 spot on the countdown and it’s a project close to my heart: a rural home in New Hampshire. Old cottages and farmhouses are my favorite spaces to see brought back to life (we live in an old farmhouse from the 1850s ), so this one (and all the love that went into keeping the character of the original space) is a personal favorite, too. Enjoy! xo, Grace #5:  An A-Frame Cottage Gets an A+ Renovation Who Lives Here :  Astrid Insieme  and her husband Brian Where : Sanbornton, NH DS debut : April 2015 CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL POST   Design*Sponge http://bit.ly/30Ro1hy May 29, 2019 at 01:00PM

A Glam Tennessee Rental Where Mid-Century Meets the 80s

Katie Thewlis   ( @hausmatter ) has never been afraid of a career change. After earning a degree in classical piano in college, she taught music and gave private piano lessons in the school system. After 10 years of teaching, she ventured into jewelry design and metalsmithing. “I launched my first jewelry collection in 2009 and by 2014, my husband and I were making a living off of our creations,” Katie tells us. Upon giving birth to the couple’s daughter Lokee, Katie soon realized that her ability to work full-time, or around a specific schedule, shifted entirely. After exploring new options that she could pursue from home with Lokee in tow, Katie decided to shift her business towards interiors, a passion that had been a constant throughout her life. Selling vintage goods turned out to be the perfect move, as Katie was easily able to strap her daughter to her back and go shopping for vintage treasures. “We have enjoyed this time together, and the more independent she gets, the m...

Top 20 Home Tours of All Time: #5 A Charming Bohemian Home in West Palm Beach, FL

I can’t believe we’ve made it to the Top 5 Home Tours of All Time . After 15 years of posting and hundreds upon hundreds of home tours, these are the tours that connected with all of you in such a strong way. Today’s tour, a beautiful bohemian home in Florida, stood out because of its incredible collection of textiles, house plants, and patterns. This home is an excellent example of the bohemian modern style that has held strong in the design community for years now. For me, this home tour will always be remembered for the peaceful photo of a sleeping cat, curled up in the sun among a colorful collection of pillows and a stunning wall hanging. Oh, to be as relaxed and comfortable as that cat all day. xo, Grace #5:  A Charming Bohemian Home in West Palm Beach, FL Who Lives There: Carley and Jonathan Summers Where :  West Palm Beach, FL DS debut : November 2015 Photographed by Carley Summers CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL TOUR   Design*Sponge http://bit.ly/...

Funny Business

This article originally appeared in Good Company ’s print issue #3. Read more from “The Money Issue” –  available now ! Comedian, writer, and actress Aparna Nancherla finds stability and builds community—onstage and off. Interview by Grace Bonney | Photography by Joyce Kim | Styling by Natalie Toren | Hair by Taylor Tanaka | Makeup by Afton Williams “Listen, I’d love to stop and chat, but I have crippling social anxiety.” “Wherever my depression is right now, I hope it’s happy.” “Isn’t therapy just a podcast off the record?” One-liners like these are precisely why comedian Aparna Nancherla’s sense of humor is so instantly relatable and beloved. Her distinctive blend of dry, slightly absurd, and thoroughly honest humor taps into our society’s collective well of anxiety and depression. What Nancherla is able to do that so many of us struggle with is to give a voice (and some lightness) to our shared struggles with mental health. And while the cliché of the slightly n...

Top 20 Recipe Posts of All Time: #6 Grandbaby Cakes’ Gooey-Gooey Cake

Jocelyn Delk Adams of Grandbaby Cakes is one of my favorite people working in food, period. She is wildly talented, kindhearted, generous, and she always has a smile on her face. It was heartbreaking to see her grandmother pass this year, but it was also a joy to see Jocelyn’s daughter, Harmony , come into the world around the same time. The love and passion for family shines through in all of Jocelyn’s recipes, and this recipe for her Gooey-Gooey Cake (a delicious butter cake recipe handed down to Jocelyn from her Aunt Beverly) is a must-bake treat. Somehow Jocelyn’s love for baking comes through from her cookbook to your kitchen and I can’t recommend all of her work more highly. Celebrating Global Design: Scandinavia

At Design*Sponge we have consciously made an effort to spark our readers’ (and our own) curiosity with beautiful and creative spaces from many international destinations as well as the 50 states. I’m so excited to bring you today’s post from our Celebrating Global Design series because we’re landing on my home turf, Scandinavia . Although Scandinavian design is renowned the world over for its functionality and streamlined essence, I think it’s timelessness that makes it worth highlighting. Most of the quintessentially Scandinavian design classics are widely considered “modern,” but truth be told they’re most likely reaching a very dignified age.  Alvar Aalto’s 30s aesthetic  is still an integral part of Nordic home decor, and  Josef Frank’s quirky fabric patterns  are as blossoming today as they were in the 40s. It’s safe to say that in the region of evergreens, we create evergreen design. Below you’ll hear from creatives from each Scandinavian country...

Top 20 Business Posts of All Time: #6 Ten Ways to Bootstrap a Sustainable Business

One of the main reasons I wanted to start a business column here at Design*Sponge was because I was tired of all of the stories about entrepreneurs being focused on people who had tons of money from day one. Most of the small business owners I knew didn’t get started with millions (or even thousands) of dollars, so I wanted to hear the stories of people who bootstrapped their way to success. All of the advice we shared in the Life & Business column, like today’s #6 post on the Top 20 Countdown , was all about celebrating and supporting the big business dreams of creative people with small business budgets. This post from Emily Fischer shares 10 helpful tips for funding your new business idea on a bootstrap budget. This advice is always helpful for just about any business model, so I hope it might inspire a few more people to get started today! xo, Grace #6:  Ten Ways to Bootstrap a Sustainable Business Who Wrote This: Emily Fischer from  Haptic Lab DS debut : Nove...

Top 20 Before & Afters of All Time: #6 1971 Shasta Camper Makeover

I was crossing my fingers that this sweet little Shasta Camper makeover would find its way onto the Top 20 list. I’ve been in love with its little back wings ever since the day we posted this, and it’s been pinned on my personal page ever since its debut in 2015. Paul and Kim of Mabel Studios turned this sad shell of a Shasta into a cheerful new home for Sam Harriss’ business,  Camp Cocktail Events . I can only imagine how fun this must be to have at any event, so getting to see how it all came together was such a blast. xo, Grace #6:  1971 Shasta Camper Makeover Who Lives Here : Sam Harriss (design by Paul and  Kim  Fuelling of  Mabel Studios ) Where : Los Angeles, CA DS debut : April 2015 CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL POST   Design*Sponge http://bit.ly/2VSWKfI May 22, 2019 at 01:00PM
