Cillian Murphy 'Struggled' With The Constant Violence Of Peaky Blinders

Over the course of  six seasons, "Peaky Blinders" routinely showed brutal displays of violence and murder as Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and his family throw punches, make multiple assassination attempts, and use the razors sown into their hats to cut their enemies. "Peaky Blinders" tells the tale of a street gang, after all, so violence has always been a crucial aspect of the show. The Shelby family engaged in illegal bookmaking, smuggling, fraud, and bribery, and not to mention their robberies and skirmishes with rival gangs. That's going to stir up some problems every now and then. Lead actor and executive producer Cillian Murphy underwent accent training and a strenuous fitness regime to embody Tommy Shelby's imposing frame and fearsome personality, and while those efforts came with challenges, there was one aspect of the role the performer says he struggled with, and it had to do with the show's depiction of violence. Tommy's Trauma Has D

Why Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Doesn't Have An End-Credits Scene

Going into " Black Panther: Wakanda Forever " carries with it a lot of emotions. There's an air of finality. Grief and all of its complications is a predominant theme going into this latest chapter. Not since "Avengers: Endgame" has a Marvel Cinematic Universe film arrived with such a feeling of heaviness going in. The circumstances are different between the two films. "Avengers: Endgame" was the conclusion of 11 years of buildup culminating in one epic showdown. "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" bears the weight of honoring and mourning the loss of Chadwick Boseman. Maintaining the balance between honoring the loss of an actor who defined a character for millions while also pushing the MCU forward in its plot trajectory is no easy feat, and certain adjustments and changes needed to be made to honor both asks. One change that will be most noticeable for fans while watching "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is the lack of a end-cred

Tom Hanks Returns As David S. Pumpkins In Halloween Edition Of Saturday Night Live

" Saturday Night Live " is no stranger to bringing back — or running into the ground — popular characters and sketches. They have been doing this since the beginning of the show nearly 50 years ago. When they hit on something, they cannot resist the urge to capitalize on it.  One of those recent characters is David S. Pumpkins, portrayed by Tom Hanks . The jack-o-lantern suited figure first appeared six years ago when Hanks hosted the show for the ninth time. The character's bit is that ... he doesn't really have one. It's Tom Hanks in a wacky suit and wig, draped on either side by Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan dressed as skeletons, and they do a brief dance. Well, the character became a massive hit, with the original sketch having 23 million views on YouTube. David S. Pumpkins returned later that same season in an episode hosted by Dwayne Johnson, and the following year, they gave the character his own Halloween special . Well, after a five year hiatus, last n

A Star Trek Beginner's Guide: Where To Start Watching The Classic Sci-Fi Franchise

The now-iconic sci-fi series "Star Trek" debuted on American television on September 8, 1966, and has been quietly purring underneath all of pop culture ever since. Although the original series went off the air in 1969, the following decade saw the show put into eternal syndication, allowing new audiences to discover it, and for fans to re-watch all their favorite episodes countless times. It was also during the 1970s that Star Trek conventions became an institution and creator Gene Roddenberry began making speaking engagements. In this decade of kibbitzing and lecturing, both the showrunner and the fans came to the mutual conclusion that "Star Trek" was one of the more utopian sci-fi shows to have been produced.  Eventually, in 1979, the show was adapted into a feature film that launched multiple sequels. By 1987, Roddenberry elected to make a spin-off of "Star Trek" which was even more diplomatic and utopian than ever. Beginning with "Star Trek:

The Boys Season 4 Will Deal With An All-Too-Familiar Real-World Theme

Prime Video's subversive superhero satire "The Boys" is known for pushing boundaries of all kinds: whether that means forever changing the way that the world will look at seafood , or upping the ante when it comes to political commentary from men in capes. "The Boys" isn't your average superhero series — it's meaner, bloodier, and much more depraved . Three seasons into its run (with a fourth on the way), audiences are well aware that debauchery awaits when they tune into the super-fighting saga. But that doesn't mean that this series can't still pack a surprising punch. The season 3 finale of "The Boys" left a lot of fans distraught and for very good reason. After being knocked down several pegs and finally seeming on the verge of defeat, the series villain Homelander (Antony Starr) has risen from the ashes of his low point and reclaimed his spot at the top of the Vought pecking order. If that cliffhanger left a bad taste in your mo

Tales From The Box Office: How The Dawn Of The Dead Remake Planted The Seeds For The DC Universe

( Welcome to Tales from the Box Office , our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them. ) Universal Pictures once had the bright idea to remake one of the all-time horror classics in the form of George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead." It is, arguably, one of the greatest genre films ever made, so who would do such a thing? Why remake a perfect movie? More importantly, who would be crazy enough to make it? Well, two then-up-and-coming filmmakers in the form of James Gunn and Zack Snyder paired as writer and director, respectively, to do the seemingly unthinkable. Even more unthinkable? It worked like gangbusters, putting them both on a path to becoming two of the biggest filmmakers in Hollywood. To that end, Snyder became the man tasked with launching DC's shared cinematic universe, directing "Man of Steel," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and the highly-troubled &

Why Harold Ramis Walked Away From Directing Galaxy Quest

What is the best "Star Trek" movie? There are a handful of options that Trekkies tend on agree on being acceptable answers to this question. (No, " Star Trek V: The Final Frontier " is not one of them, but nice try.) Their ranks include often "Galaxy Quest," itself a loving sendup of "Star Trek: The Original Series" that, in some ways, honors the spirit of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's utopian sci-fi vision better than many actual "Star Trek" films. Directed by Dean Parisot, the beloved 1999 film follows the washed-up stars of a popular "Star Trek"-style 1980s sci-fi series as they're pulled away from their monotonous routine of fan conventions and promotional work and into a real-life interplanetary conflict. Parisot had mostly worked in TV prior to making the movie and had recently called the shots on "Home Fries," the 1998 Drew Barrymore dramedy that's only really notable for being

Star Trek: Lower Decks Revives A Classic Trek Trope, Just In Time For The Season Finale

This post contains spoilers for the season finale of "Star Trek: Lower Decks." In the last episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," the U.S.S. Cerritos found themselves under attack by a small armada of Breen warships. The California-class vessel was severely outmatched, and was at risk of being destroyed when a heretofore unseen starship, the U.S.S. Aledo, swooped in, destroyed the attackers and saved the day. The Aledo, it is later revealed, was an experimental Texas-class starship that was run entirely by artificial intelligence. There was no crew on board. The Texas class was the brainchild of one Vice Admiral Buen Amigo (Carlos Alazraqui), who sought to reduce both casualties and any human error in Starfleet by essentially replacing its officers with drones.  As any good Trekkie knows, creating an artificially intelligent machine is an enormous can of worms on "Star Trek," and giving both A.I. and weapons to a drone is asking for trouble. As is reveal

Star Trek: Lower Decks Finally Got Around To Referencing An Infamous Next Generation Easter Egg

Warning: The following article contains spoilers for the "Star Trek: Lower Decks"  season 3 finale. In "Star Trek," there are two phenomena called the Picard Maneuver. Within Trek canon, the maneuver was a clever tactical strategy meant to be employed in close-up, ship-to-ship battle. The idea was that if a Starfleet vessel were to throw itself into warp speed for a split second, zipping toward their opponent, it would temporarily look like there were two ships. The invention of the Picard Maneuver was discussed in the " Star Trek: The Next Generation " episode "The Battle" (November 16, 1987). In fandom, the Picard Maneuver is the given nickname for the small, waist-level, two-handed downward tug that actor Patrick Stewart gave to the front of his costume whenever he stood up.  Likewise with the Riker Maneuver. In "Star Trek: Insurrection," Cmdr. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) steers the Enterprise-E through a cloud of unstable, explosiv

Paul Reiser Initially Thought The Boys Was Too 'Rude' To Accept A Role In

Paul Reiser has been around the block a time or two, but joining the hit subversive, superhero satire series " The Boys " was something he never could have imagined. In the third season of the hit show for Prime Video, Reiser joined the cast as The Legend, the former Senior Vice President of Hero Management for Vought International. Despite the popular show boasting Emmy-nominated status and consistently being one of the most-watched shows on the streamer, Reiser had never heard of the series until showrunner Eric Kripke approached him about playing The Legend in a guest spot. As we recently learned in an interview with Consequence of Sound , he admitted he tried to reject the offer after reading the raunchy, violent, and intentionally offensive script. "I got this thing and then my agent said, "It's a really hot show, you should read the script,' and I read it and I was not familiar with the show, so I just read my scenes and I went, 'I can't do

Deadwood Creator David Milch's Experience Writing Bad Boys Was Tied To A Horse Race

Studio script doctoring is remarkably lucrative work. According to a 2016 Hollywood Reporter survey , when a massively expensive film needs tweaking prior to or during shooting (or during last-second reshoots), A-list screenwriters who can deliver high-quality work within a tight window can pull down as much as $400,000 per week. Depending on the film and how broken the script is, that meter can run an awfully long time. That's some serious cheddar. So let's say you're a rich spendthrift who loves horse racing like David Milch, the genius TV writer who created "NYPD Blue" and "Deadwood." Throughout his Emmy-winning career, Milch has poured a good deal of his earnings into many thoroughbreds, two of which won the coveted Breeders' Cup. He knows horses. But if you know horse people, you're aware that knowledge is far from omniscient. You lose more than you win. And if you're wagering a lot of money, as Milch did while he earned somewhere in

Jodie Whitaker's Orange Spacesuit Is A Beloved Doctor Who Easter Egg

When you sign on as the lead character of the seminal sci-fi series "Doctor Who," there are certain things that must happen. First, you need an instantly recognizable costume. Then, you'll have to pick out the right Sonic Screwdriver. It's recommended that you change the desktop on the TARDIS as well, but it's not always necessary. You should also expect to mix it up with a number of classic monsters from across the long-running British show's extensive history like Daleks, Cybermen, and maybe even The Master. And, seeing as you would be a part of the New Who (or NuWho) era, you would have to find an excuse to wear the beloved orange spacesuit. Luckily, just under the wire before she took her final bow as the iconic Time Lord, Jodie Whitaker's Thirteenth Doctor donned the suit for the first and last time in "The Power of the Doctor" before regenerating. The tradition of wearing the spacesuit first started with David Tennant's Tenth Doctor
