King Viserys' House Of The Dragon Illness Became A Real-Life Problem For Paddy Considine

Paddy Considine's portrayal of King Viserys in "House of the Dragon" has been nothing short of terrific. The show has been commended for consistently improving on the book : it gives King Viserys the space to be a human being  and makes him agonize and endure the consequences of his decisions. The show takes its time to depict the trials and tribulations of his suffering and illustrates how his illness torments him. King Viserys succumbs to his suffering after over a decade, and Paddy Considine has recently revealed he hurt himself filming the King's final moments. Playing the part of a frail, ailing man is sure to take an emotional toll on an actor, but Considine also physically hurt himself in the process. 'It's A Strange Thing The Brain Does' In an interview with Complex , Considine explained how "strange" it was to film his character's final moments. For his performance, the actor drew from his personal experiences and stated how hi

Chainsaw Man Episode 8 Descends Into Madness

There it is. The moment it hits the fan and "Chainsaw Man" descends into madness. Last week saw the end of the prologue , as we now know all the major players and their deal, have a grasp of the stakes, the main conflict and villain, and our hero's goals.  With the introductions out of the way, the brutal, weird, relentlessly gory "Chainsaw Man" can truly begin. This is the show that manga fans have been clamoring for years, the "Chainsaw Man" that became a sensation in the manga world, that anime fans have been painfully anticipating from the moment it was announced. No one is safe, anything can happen, and it rules. After last week ended with an indecent proposal, this episode pulls back and repeats last week's final scene from a different perspective. This is a rare move in anime, where repeat scenes aren't usually a thing unless it's to recap the story or to show some grand reveal we didn't see the first time. Here, we get an ani

Jordan Peele Talks About How Live Comedy Helped Prepare Him For Failure

Over the last five years, Jordan Peele has reinvented himself as one of the most acclaimed horror filmmakers working today. His directorial debut, "Get Out," won him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, which is about as successful as you can get for a first-time filmmaker. However, as any "Key & Peele" fan knows, Peele comes from a comedy background, and for him, the road to movies like "Get Out," "Us," and "Nope," was paved with as much failure as success. Sketch comedy is one thing, of course, but live comedy can be especially brutal for a performer onstage if and when their jokes bomb and they have to deal with rejection from the audience in real-time (not unlike the classic "Key & Peele" sketch where an insult comic meets his match ). On a recent episode of the  Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, Peele discussed how enduring the travails of painful comedy failures earlier in his career helped

George And Tammy Review: An Engaging Musical Tragedy With Excellent Performances

Tammy Wynette and George Jones are easily two of the most influential artists in country music history. Their marriage started as a passionate meeting of two musical minds but descended into tragic toxicity before their divorce and the increasingly unfortunate circumstances that followed. "George & Tammy," Showtime's new entry in the thriving stream of music biopics, is a testament to that cavalcade of events leading up to Wynette's tragic fate. The series, created by Abe Sylvia ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye") and directed and executive produced by John Hillcoat ("The Road"), is, of course, based on the real-life relationship and catastrophes of the country music legends. It nonetheless enters a crowded field of media highlighting a relationship between entertainers, one rising, the other struggling to cope (think every adaptation of "A Star Is Born" among others). The longer-form medium that is the limited series is a friend here, givin

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special Finally Lets Mantis Grow As A Character

This piece contains  minor spoilers for "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special." After adventuring the cosmic Marvel galaxy alongside Thor in "Love and Thunder," our loveable misfit group of space outlaws has been reunited once again with writer/director James Gunn for " The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special " on Disney+. Set right before "The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," the special is a lighthearted, heartfelt little interlude before the trilogy is complete and we definitively part ways with these characters that have stolen our hearts. Sure, it might be a tad inconsequential in the grand scheme of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's been five years since "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and after all the pain this family has gone through during the Infinity Saga, a fluffy breather is exactly what these characters needed. But would it truly be a Gunn project without a proper emotional gut punch? This time,

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special Pays Homage To One Of The Worst Christmas Movies Ever Made

Running a mere 42 minutes, James Gunn's " The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special " has a simple premise. The alien characters Mantis (Pom Klemetieff) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) have noticed that their friend, the human Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), has been sullen of late. As aliens, they have little knowledge of Earth customs, but have put together that on Star-Lord's home planet they are about to engage in an oblique local holiday called Christmas. Mantis and Drax know that giving gifts is a central part of the holiday, and they elect to go to Earth in secret to acquire the ultimate present: Kevin Bacon ( Kevin Bacon ). Evidently, Star-Lord, who was kidnapped from Earth as a boy in the 1980s, has spoken at length about Bacon and his talents, and Mantis and Drax think nothing of kidnapping the actor and putting him in a box as a favor to their friend.  Alive, of course. They don't want to kill Bacon. A good deal of "Special" is devoted to

Ready Player One Ending Explained: The Power Of Friendship And Why It's Crucial To Touch Grass

When Steven Spielberg decided to adapt Ernest Cline's sci-fi fantasy novel, "Ready Player One," the book underwent critical reappraisal and the reception to the adaptation was mixed. There were good reasons for this to happen: Cline's novel, which was hailed as a heartfelt trip down nostalgia lane when it was first released, was now re-evaluated through the lens of toxic nerd culture that catered predominantly to straight, white males. Moreover, with the advent of Gamergate in early 2014, it became impossible to view Cline's vision as a harmless, escapist fantasy — instead, it read as an exhausting, hollow catalog of '80s pop culture trivia that promotes problematic gatekeeping. More importantly, it props up an escapist fantasy that is exclusionary, misogynistic, and deeply toxic. Does Spielberg manage to improve upon these aspects in Cline's novel? For the most part, yes. Spielberg is the kind of director who rarely misses: while " Ready Player On

Justin Long Doesn't Mind Being The Guy Who Always Dies

In the world of fiction, every character serves a purpose. For some unlucky characters, their only purpose in the narrative is to die. These characters are sometimes known as "Redshirts," a term coined by "Star Trek" fans used to refer to the unfortunate ensigns who'd be sent along on a mission with the main cast members, their inevitable death just a plot device to raise the stakes of the episode. Death is a commonly used trope in film and television because it's a common experience in real life. A character's death can serve many purposes, whether it be illustrating the danger and severity of a situation or forcing another character to undergo change and growth. It works as a narrative tool, and so writers use it often. It makes sense, then, that in Hollywood, you start to see some actors pushed into the Redshirt role more often than others. Actors like Sean Bean have gained a reputation for always dying in any movie or TV show they star in (possi

Reading Scripts Ahead Of Time Doesn't Help On The Set Of The Orville

"The Orville" seems to be the little ship that could. Now the show is left to deal with a future unknown (which doubled as the Season 3 finale episode title ... Seth MacFarlane you clever devil), and cast members are divulging some secrets from the first three seasons. Since its 2017 debut, "The Orville" has grown with each season from a simple punchline model into a series that tackles complicated issues such as race and gender. Maybe even too complex, some cast members might tell you, at least when it comes to keeping the scripts straight. With the show's growth and the chaos caused by a pandemic that briefly shut down the film and TV industry, the cast of "The Orville" decided it's just easier to not read the scripts ahead of time. 'Oh My God, I'm A Part Of That'

For instance, the 2018 video " The War for Disney's America " is both a rundown of a canceled Disney theme park and an examination of Disney's cultural and political place in American history. However, a lot has changed with

David Fincher Directed Fight Club Because David O. Russell 'Didn't Get It'

"Fight Club" is a movie people either love or hate. Some viewers are drawn to the nihilistic rants and machismo of Tyler Durden ( Brad Pitt ), while others are turned off by his constant violence and ramblings about the emptiness of consumerism and society. Chuck Palahniuk, who wrote the novel the film is based on, prides himself on eliciting strong, yet polarizing, reactions through his words. In an interview with The Guardian , he admitted, "I'm fascinated by low fiction that generates a physical response: disgusts the reader, makes them hungry or sexually aroused." The story of an Ikea-obsessed corporate drone running an underground fighting ring that partakes in breaking and entering and terrorism on the side is a decent premise that might catch an audience's attention, but Palahniuk kicks it up a notch with brutal violence, unabashed sexuality, and unapologetic nihilism. Nothing ruffles feathers quite like the blend of blood, sex, and philosophy, whic
