Here's Why Roman's Girlfriend Was Written Out After Succession's Pilot Episode

The Roy family on HBO's "Succession" has a lot of issues, but slime puppy Roman, played by Kieran Culkin , may be the one with the most problems. The COO of Waystar Royco is known for his jagged snark, but his quick and mean wit is clearly a cover-up for his deep-seated insecurities about his relationships and sexuality. The character started off as a sociopathic bully at the beginning of the series, but he's grown in complexity since then. However, there is one detail about Roman in the pilot episode that has remained mysterious: What happened to his wife and/or girlfriend and her daughter? Despite how tightly written "Succession" is, the writers hadn't quite figured out the status quo of its cast of characters at the very start. Roman, who also wears a wedding ring at this point, is seen in the first episode kissing a woman who is eventually revealed to be someone named Grace who has a daughter named Isla. They first appeared in the Thanksgiving-set

James Gunn Says Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Is About Learning To Accept Yourself

In the vast tapestry that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies — based on the comics by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning — filled the role of "quirky outsiders." This is a gargantuan feat, given the number of gods, aliens, monsters, and other extraordinary beings found throughout the series. The team consisted of a single human being, Peter (Chris Pratt) who was abducted by a UFO as a child, and had eventually fallen into a family-like relationship with a team of mutants and alien warriors. There was Rocket Raccoon (voice of Bradley Cooper), a talking tree named Groot (Vin Diesel), a deadly assassin named Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), her mostly-mechanical sister Nebula (Karen Gillen), a literal-minded bruiser named Drax (Dave Bautista), and the gentle psychic Mantis (Pom Klementieff).  While Gunn had previously worked with much edgier material (he wrote the aggressively filthy "Tromeo & Juliet" back in the 1990s and

The Boogeyman Uses Stephen King's Original Short Story As The Inciting Incident

One day in the distant future, horror fans are going to have a rude awakening. Eventually, every single idea that Stephen King has ever committed to the page is going to be adapted into a film or television series; it's inevitable. But until that sad day comes, let's all continue to focus on what spooky King property is coming down the pipeline next.  The sparse but undeniably creepy short story "The Boogeyman" from the "Night Shift" collection is being adapted by director Rob Savage from a script by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, scribes for "A Quiet Place". Originally, the movie was set to premiere on Hulu this year until a well-received test screening and a winning endorsement from King himself convinced Disney's 20th Century Studios to release the film theatrically.  The risk of releasing new genre films in movie theaters instead of going directly to streaming has been paying off big time for Warner Bros. Discovery after the overperformanc

Patrick Stewart Himself Filled In The 20-Year Gap Between Star Trek: The Next Generation & Picard

Because the characters in "Star Trek" tend to mark the passage of time by Stardates, it takes some delving by resourceful Trekkies to find when the various "Trek" shows take place on the Gregorian calendar. "Star Trek: The Next Generation," said Trekkies have found, began in the year 2364 and lasted until 2370. "Star Trek: Generations" took place in '71, "First Contact" in '73, "Insurrection" in '75, and "Nemesis" in '79. After a well-documented 15 years with the "Next Generation" cast, it seemed that they would move on with their lives and audiences would no longer be privy to their adventures. Of course, that all changed in 2017 with the launch of CBS All Access, later renamed Paramount+, and the sudden abundance of "Star Trek" the new streaming platform wanted to provide. Many new "Star Trek" shows were put into production, including "Star Trek: Picard," a

What Ship Was Sisko On In Star Trek: The Next Generation's Battle At Wolf 359

Though "Star Trek" tends to be less war-focused than that other "Star" franchise, there have been some pretty major conflicts that have impacted more than one series. In the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," one of these major events was brought back into focus through a new perspective, giving insight into another moment in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." One of the most important and harrowing events in Federation history was the Battle at Wolf 359, where the United Federation of Planets did battle with the Borg, leading to the largest cause of casualties for Starfleet prior to the Dominion War. In episode 4 of Picard's third season, "No Win Scenario," Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick) reveals why he's a bit prejudiced against former Borg and has such a hate boner for Picard (Patrick Stewart). It turns out that he was actually on one of the ships that were destroyed at Wolf 359, and he witnessed absolute horrors, including mo

Warner Bros. Used Lauren Bacall's Contract To Get Revenge On Humphrey Bogart

The Golden Age of Hollywood gave us a plethora of phenomenal acting pairs that would appear together in film after film. We had Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn , Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, and many more. In a time where franchises and intellectual properties were not ruling Hollywood, pairing two actors together again was its own form of franchising. They were similar kinds of movies, but each told different stories with the actors playing different characters. The chemistry was all you needed to get people to come back for more. One of the best pairings of the era was obviously Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Not only were both of them phenomenal actors who had scintillating on-screen chemistry, but there was also the added factor that the two became a couple and were married until Bogart's death in 1957. Over the course of their partnership, they made four movies together between 1944's "To Have and Have Not" and 1948's &q

How The 2011 Crossover Comic Flashpoint Inspired The Flash Movie

It's no secret by now that DC's "The Flash" will pull some of its universe-resetting story from Geoff Johns and Andy Kuberts' 2011 comic run "Flashpoint," but fans of the speedy superhero still don't know exactly how much of the new movie will draw inspiration from the famed 5-issue run. /Film's Jenna Busch attended a screening of the new film with director Andy Muschietti in attendance, and the filmmaker shed some light on exactly what parts of "Flashpoint" we should expect to be incorporated in Barry Allen's (Ezra Miller) big-screen solo debut. Muschietti noted first that by the time he boarded the project, "the story or at least the outline was decided" by DC already. Screenwriter Christina Hodson handled the film's script, and Muschietti said that the story of "The Flash" isn't as repetitive as some other superhero origins. As he put it: "My opinion is like every time, for instance — and I lo

This news brought with it a lot of mixed reactions, from those who can't fundamentally reconcile their feelings for the franchise and the controversy surrounding its creator, notorious bigot J.K. Rowling , to even those who would like the property to try something new rather than just tell the same story over and over again and never move beyond Hogwarts. Regardless, there is no denying that the idea of a school but with magic is compelling -- but how to scratch that itch without supporting Rowling or rewatching the exact same story told a second time? Slasher: Ripper Review: Blood, Guts, And A Lot Of Heart

I have an opinion: "Slasher" is better than "American Horror Story."  Maybe that's not so controversial to say in 2023, when the popular horror anthology series created by Ryan Murphy hasn't had a good season in almost five years, and hasn't had a  great  one in over 10. "AHS" premiered in 2011, the same year that the sci-fi/technology-run-amok anthology series "Black Mirror" premiered. Curiously, though "Black Mirror" was just as popular, and was covered as furiously as "AHS" was in its prime, its influence on subsequent sci-fi visions seems to have jumped mediums to film. One can imagine pressing play on a new season of "Black Mirror" and watching films like "Ex-Machina," "The Circle," and "Vivarium," were a few minutes shaved off each. "AHS," however, spawned a veritable renaissance in horror anthology series, from HBO's "Room 104," to Hulu's

Beau Is Afraid Contains A Subtle Reference To A 90s Ray Liotta Movie

For his follow-up to the critically acclaimed horror hits "Hereditary" and "Midsommar," writer-director Ari Aster has come out swinging with "Beau Is Afraid," a more divisive "evil comedy," as he calls it, starring Joaquin Phoenix. The film has drawn comparisons to everything from Darren Aronofsky's "mother!" to Charlie Kaufman's "Synecdoche, New York." And in fact, "mother" might be the operative word for "Beau Is Afraid," which our review calls "a Freudian hellride." The plot, per the official A24 synopsis, follows "a paranoid man [who] embarks on an epic odyssey to get home to his mother." The use of Phoenix -- star of "The Master" and "Inherent Vice" -- and the Supertramp song "Goodbye Stranger," which featured in "Magnolia," also brings to mind the works of Paul Thomas Anderson in the "Beau Is Afraid" trailer . One Of The Batman Crew's Biggest Challenges Was Building A Fully-Functional Batmobile

In "The Batman," filmmaker Matt Reeves introduced a whole new take on the Batmobile after the iconic car had been through multiple on-screen iterations. Prior to Reeves' 2022 film, Christopher Nolan introduced us all to a Batmobile envisioned as a former military vehicle that one bewildered Gotham cop famously referred to as a "tank." A similarly bulky design found its way into the Zack Snyder movies. Reeves, however, decided to pare things down for his effort, and introduced a version of the Batmobile that had, like its hero's suit, been cobbled together from various parts to make a Frankenstein-like muscle car from your nightmares. Reeves has spoken about wanting the Batmobile in "The Batman" to look like something out of a David Lynch movie , and said in an interview for James Field's book, "The Art of The Batman," that the point of the car was, "to intimidate, to create terror." The director made no secret of his horro
