Gemma Chan Joins the 'Captain Marvel' Cast as the Mysterious Minn-Erva

The latest entry in the MCU canon, " Captain Marvel ," just started production, and already has social media buzzing thanks to some early set photos . Now, fans have even more to talk about, with the addition of actress Gemma Chan to the cast. Deadline reports that Chan, the star of AMC sci-fi series "Humans," will be starring as a character named Minn-Erva (known later in the comics as Doctor Minerva), who has the same alien superpowers as the titular character, played by Brie Larson . Comic Book Resources has a lengthy breakdown of Minn-Erva's appearances in the original Marvel comics (full of possible SPOILERS for the new film, no doubt, so read on at your own risk), and it sounds like the character is extremely eccentric, and potentially quite dangerous. Whether Chan will be playing her as friend or foe in the flick is unclear right now, but suffice it to say, we're definitely intrigued by her inclusion. Setting aside her character's history,

'Black Panther' Is Inspiring People to Adopt Black Cats

As " Black Panther " continues its meteoric rise at the box office, racking up hundreds of millions of dollars and becoming a cultural sensation, it's also given a boost to pet shelters, too: Social media users are reporting that the flick has inspired them to adopt black cats. The sweet phenomenon has been blowing up Twitter and Tumblr, with one member of the latter site revealing that several local shelters near her Durango, Colorado home had seen about 60 black cats adopted out in recent weeks. According to user gallusrostromegalus , the names T'Challa (after Chadwick Boseman's titular superhero), Okoye (after Danai Gurira's badass leader of the king's guard, the Dora Milaje), and Shuri (after Letita Wright's fan-favorite Wakandan princess ) have proven the most popular among those who've filled out adoption paperwork, though one particular tribute to Michael B. Jordan's villain had "one very confused Elderly Humane Society Volunteer

Here's When 'Solo' Takes Place in the 'Star Wars' Timeline

When are we, Han Solo? The broad outline of "Solo: A Star Wars Story" was revealed in the trailer earlier this month , but many details are still unknown about this young Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich). Who is Qi'Ra (Emilia Clarke)? How did he meet Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover)? Where is this mysterious planet he's seen traipsing on? What's the deal with that many-armed alien voiced by Jon Favreau ? While all of that may not be fully revealed until the movie actually comes out, a new timeline posted by Del Rey Books (the publisher of the official "Star Wars" novelizations) sheds some light at least on the "where" of it all. As the timeline shows, the "Solo" novelization takes place after "Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" and before "Rogue One" and the animated TV series "Clone Wars." Specifically, the "Solo" novel is set 11 to 14 years before "Episode IV: A New Hope," or when Lu

'The Week Of' Trailer: Yep, It's Another Adam Sandler Netflix Movie

More Adam Sandler is coming to a Netflix near you. The streaming service released an extended trailer for "The Week Of," the latest movie in their deal with Sandler and his Happy Madison Productions. This one also stars Chris Rock , his former "SNL" buddy. "The Week Of" is the story of Sandler's middle-class father, who is determined to pay for his daughter's wedding despite a proffer by Rock's wealthier father of the groom. When both families come together for the big event, hijinks ensue (naturally). There's a substandard hotel, a magician, asbestos in moderation, and a grand-uncle missing both legs. The movie also stars Rachel Dratch and Steve Buscemi, and was co-written with Sandler and directed by Robert Smigel. This is the fourth and final film in Netflix's deal with Sandler. Before you sigh in relief, they re-upped the deal, so you can look forward to another four in the future. "The Week Of" begins streaming Ap

Jennifer Lawrence Gets Drunk With Stephen Colbert, Un-Invites Haters to 'Red Sparrow'

Jennifer Lawrence doesn't want any haters to see her new movie, "Red Sparrow." The Oscar-winning actress appeared on "Late Show With Stephen Colbert," where she drank rum with the host and sounded off on politics, Harvey Weinstein, and haters with blogs. "It's entertaining," Lawrence said of "Red Sparrow." "Don't put any political weight on it. Like, if you're like a typical hater and you have a blog, don't go! You're officially totally uninvited. I would like to officially un-invite all my haters to go see 'Red Sparrow.'" Lawrence also blasted Weinstein, who recently named her and Meryl Streep in his defense against sexual misconduct lawsuit. "He is just that horrible ass boil that does not go away," she said. " You pop the ass boil. He's just the worst. Just when is it gonna end? In the middle of the night I come up with a statement in London, and I was like, 'It's stil

Michael B. Jordan Is Burning Hot in HBO's 'Fahrenheit 451' Trailer

Michael B. Jordan is on fire. The actor is currently starring in the biggest movie of the year (and many other other years), "Black Panther." And now, he's burning up the new trailer for HBO's movie "Fahrenheit 451." Based on the classic sci-fi book by Ray Bradbury, the movie is set in a dystopian future and follows Guy Montag (Jordan), a fireman who burns books in a campaign of censorship and information control. As his boss Captain Beatty ( Michael Shannon ) says, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing." And that includes news, memoirs, and the "internet of old." At first, Guy dutifully points his flamethrower at the illegal books, but soon begins questioning the rightness of what they're doing. This adaptation feels very timely, much like Hulu's "Handmaid's Tale," with all the talk of fake news and the president's attacks on mainstream media. "Fahrenheit 451" premieres on HBO in May. Movie

The forever-futuristic knife

There’s something timeless about the CRKT Snap Lock Knife. For starters, looking at it, you probably wouldn’t have figured that this knife was in production as early as 2004 (it won the Most Innovative Knife Award at the Blade Show). It looks incredibly cutting edge (clever wordplay?) even today, for a knife design that’s turning 14 this year. CRKT’s reissue of this legendary blade means more people can own it and be charmed by its awe-inspiring design that comes with a pretty nifty looking cam mechanism that allows the blade to rotate on a completely different axis as compared to switchblades/folding-blades. The mechanism demands the knife have a hollow handle that allows it to look just stunning when opened AND when closed, while making sure that the knife itself remains lightweight (weighing just 2.56 ounces). As a result, when closed, the sharp edge of the blade is completely concealed and out of harm’s way. What’s more, the knife’s design even integrates a money clip into the pr

A Chicago Home Filled With Reflections of Family, Culture & Love

When Mylene and Ramilo bought their 1948 Chicago Georgian home, they arrived with their dog, full hearts, and gratitude for their opportunity. In the four years they’ve lived there, they’ve added two sons (one of whom just came home from the hospital!), interwoven both of their cultures –Mylene is Puerto Rican and Ramilo is Filipino — and layered in thrifted, found, and garage sale finds to create a welcoming home that reflects them as a family. “I remember when we first bought our home,” Mylene recalls. “It was empty and we brought in a bunch of pillows and fold-out small picnic tables. We ordered pizza and invited our closest friends and family over. We ate, played games, and then had a moment where we all prayed over our new home. It is one of the most beautiful memories I have here — friends and family all scattered around the house, in different rooms praying over the spaces. Also, of course, knowing this is the home my children have and will spend their first years is so preci

Doing Your Taxes This Year Is Easier Than Ever With TurboTax Live

Tax season is in full swing and it is, well, taxing. I’ve filed electronically with TurboTax for the last several years and I’ve only had great experiences. This year it’s a whole new game. TurboTax introduced a new service that eliminates a ton of stress for excessive worriers like me. It’s called TurboTax Live and it’s designed to provide live assistance from a credentialed tax expert, on demand. I consulted said experts no less than six times while doing my taxes this year. The number of contacts would have been much higher if it weren’t for the thoughtful questions at the end of the questions on each page. When I say the questions were thoughtful I mean that they provided a concise, legit question followed by a detailed explanation about why and how the information is relevant to your tax return, written in language anyone can understand. I’ve maintained a home office for the last eight years and this is the first year I felt confident enough to actually claim the deduction. Wh
